Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron Full Display

Species: Yellow-Crowned Night-Heron | Location: Miramar, Broward County, Southeastern Florida, USA

The herons usually return to this rookery along a rainwater drainage canal and pair up in early March. Unfortunately its trees were destroyed by herbicide application to control exotic vegetation, and may no longer be suitable, as these herons usually build secluded nests on limbs that overhang the canal. Now the limbs are defoliated and dead. Only remnants of two of last year's 8-12 nests are visible and now are out in the open. Two pairs arrived in late February but did not stay. this male does not appear to be accompanied by a mate. He showed his displeasure at my presence (on the opposite side of the canal) by exhibiting a territorial display that is usually directed at its mate or rival males.
