Species: King Penguin | Location: St. Andrew's Bay, South Georgia Island
This photo was taken during our second attempt to land at St. Andrew's Bay on South Georgia Island. The first attempt was aborted due to 78 mph winds. The staff took us to shore just after sunrise. The weather was clear for about an hour before the clouds moved in. I observed a pair of king penguins exhibiting some courtship behavior, and took a few pictures. I then turned away and was taking pictures of other kings. When I looked back at the courting pair, I saw that there were now three—something I had never witnessed previously. I took a few shots, but then two of the penguins started pecking at the third. According to the guides, a threesome is somewhat unusual. The third penguin could be one that lost its mate or a relatively young bird. At any rate, it was something new for me.
