Species: Great Gray Owl | Location: Grand Teton National Park, USA
This owl had spent the last few days hunting the wet meadows in the corner of the park. Her chicks are almost as large as she is now, so she must forgo roosting to instead hunt later and later into the morning, allowing for excellent photographic light. We positioned ourselves to take advantage of the dark shadow behind her, and predicted the direction she would fly. We threw the cameras into manual to expose for the hard light on the owl. After 45 minutes, she left her perch in pursuit of a vole and gave us the trophy shot we had set ourselves up for!
