Species: Bat eared fox | Location: Central Kalahari Game reserve, Botswana
The bat-eared foxes run in small packs. They were jumping around in the grass and alertly traveling the road in search of food. I had never seen them in the wild before... They sport the eye bands one sees on raccoons. This is a relatively rare sighting of a somewhat elusive critter. The very large ears are used almost like sonar to hear prey making noise either underground or hiding on the surface. Bat-eared foxes are adept at digging up the prey they hear from underneath the surface.
