A Fresh Breath

Weddell seals are a circumpolar mammal that live off the coast of Antarctica. In the southern spring, these animals give birth on the sea ice and nurse their young for 30-45 days. In this time, the pups learn to swim and hunt from their mothers before being abandoned. In this picture, a pup that is learning to swim has broken through some brash ice to catch a quick breath before disappearing again into the cold blue waters.

Eric Boyd graduated with a BS in Fish & Wildlife Management from Montana State University. Since graduating he has studied Weddell Seals in Antarctica, Grizzly Bears in the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem, and Bighorn Sheep in Montana and Wyoming. His seasonal life creates an ever changing adventure.
