2016 WILDLIFE PHOTO CONTEST PEOPLE'S CHOICE THIRD PLACE HONORABLE MENTION
While on a recent safari in Tanzania, we were able to get many special, one-on-one moments with animals at very close distances. On June 6, we were out in the middle of the central Serengeti and spotted a male lion sitting up in the tall grass. We drove over near him and heard a low growl as we stopped less than 10 feet from him. He jumped up and roared at us loud enough to make my wife and I jump back in fear. We sat and watched him and his mate for a minute as he laid down. Then, as we were taking photos and enjoying the moment, he did it again, clearly not happy that were there. This time, I caught this image. He's staring directly at me, in the middle of the Serengeti, with no one anywhere near us. We hadn't seen another vehicle for over 45 minutes and wouldn't see another for another hour. We left him alone shortly after because he obviously was not happy we were interrupting. It was an incredible moment.
