Species: carmine bee eater | Location: Mana Pools National Park, Zimbabwe
We were fortunate to find a large breeding colony of carmine bee eaters along the banks of the Zambezi River in Zimbabwe. We saw them swarming first early in the day from our jeep on a game drive. We were lucky enough to see them again later in the day from a canoe along the river, and were able to get quite close. Our canoe drifted right into the middle of the colony and we sat for several minutes watching large numbers of them take off and land over and over.
