Tapir Mother and Calf

Species: Baird's Tapir | Location: Corcovado National Park, Costa Rica

On a guided nature walk through Corcovado National Park on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica, our guide stopped us while we were walking in a river bed. A bird call had announced something noteworthy -- moments later, this Tapir mother appeared from out of the thick jungle. Then her calf followed, closely behind her. We stood motionless and silent. Amazingly, the Tapir mother and her calf walked past us, along the river bed, and then disappeared back into the jungle a couple of hundred meters behind us. The local guide stood in amazement -- in all his years, he had never experienced anything like this.
