Guarding the Territory

Species: Male Bengal Tiger | Location: Ranthambore Tiger Reserve, India

Male tigers mark trees and rocks by spraying urine. This lets tigresses and tigers know whose territory they are entering. To do this, they travel considerable distances each day. This photo was made when we spotted this handsome male tiger marking his territory. Guided by our experienced driver, we drove farther, expecting the tiger to walk straight up to us. And that is exactly what it did after a few anxious moments, for which it was invisible to us. As it was late in the day, quality of light was very good resulting in rich colours. But quantity was not enough to reveal details of individual hair. As I was using 600 mm lens, and this is a full frame image, I could make this image at eye level.
