Dangerous Liaisons

Species: African Lion | Location: Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province., South Africa

A lion pride usually consist of 1-3 adult males with a few females and sub-adults. When one of the females come into estrus (reproductive cycle) the male will take her away from the pride and will mate about every 20 minutes for up to four days. We were lucky to find this "honeymoon" couple mating and witnessed a few mating sessions. This female appeared irritable with the male and I presumed this was already day three or four of mating.
