Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator), Cordillera Escalera conservation Area, Peru
Tadpole Transport

Species: Mimic Poison Frog (Ranitomeya imitator) | Location: Cordillera Escalera conservation Area, Peru

This is a thumbnail poison frog from the Peruvian jungle. Amphibians are not known for their parenting skills but this species breaks the mold and takes its parenting to extremes. The male frog will guard the eggs, then carry the tadpoles on his back as seen here, and deposit them in a small pool of water. He will then return to check on the tadpoles and when they are hungry, guide the female back to deposit unfertilized eggs in the pool to feed the tadpole.
