Kermode, "Spirit Bear", Great Bear Rainforest, Canada
Great Escape

Species: Kermode, "Spirit Bear" | Location: Great Bear Rainforest, Canada

The "Spirit Bear" or Kermode bear is one of the rarest bears on earth. It is only found in and around The Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia, Canada. It is a black bear with recessive genes giving it a white coat (not an albino). We hiked in along a remote stream near Hartley Bay, BC hoping to spot this mythic bear of the 1st Nation Tribes. Hours of waiting was rewarded when this white bear arrived at the stream and it was obvious it was focused on catching salmon that were moving up river. The bear stared intently at a pool holding numerous salmon. I pushed the shutter as the bear leaped into the pool after this escaping fish.
