Garter Snake, Rainbow Trout, Mount Shasta, Southern Cascade Range, United States of America
Garter Snake Swallowing Rainbow Trout

Species: Garter Snake, Rainbow Trout | Location: Mount Shasta, Southern Cascade Range, United States of America

I approached a favorite swimming hole on the Upper Sacramento River in Northern California when I encountered a large Garter Snake swallowing a 7-inch Rainbow Trout. I have witnessed many unusual encounters with wildlife over the 35 years I have lived in Mount Shasta, but never have I seen this. I seriously questioned whether the snake was capable of fully ingesting the fish, but nature would ultimately prove me wrong.
