Plains Bison, Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada
Up Close and Personal - Plains Bison

Species: Plains Bison | Location: Waterton Lakes National Park, Canada

Although they once roamed the prairies in massive herds, the Plains Bison are now a threatened species with only small pocket herds remaining. There is a paddock on the border of Waterton Lakes National Park in Alberta with one of these herds. On an early morning in May I had the opportunity to sit next to the fence and observe the herd from a short distance. This curious bull approached within feet of me allowing me an up-close and personal experience. To be so close to such a large powerful animal is a moving experience and one that allowed me to feel connected to such a beautiful animal that is such an iconic part of Canada.

About The Photographer

Cropped 0987
My name is Kyla Black and I am an outdoor photographer from Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada. I love showcasing the beauty of my home province through images of landscapes, wildlife and abandoned farmsteads. My passion for photography normally finds me scouting a gravel back road for my next inspiration. That's how I came up with my company name of Gathering Dust Photography. If my vehicle is covered in dust, it typically means I spent the day doing what I love. I am fortunate to live in one of the most beautiful and inspiring places in the world and I hope to share this beauty with others through my images. I developed a passion for photography at a young age. Growing up I spent many hours with my family exploring the back roads near our home. It has always brought me great joy to be out in nature. It seemed a natural fit to get into photography so I could capture those moments. The excitement of being in the right place at the right time to capture a glimpse of this amazing world is what drives me. To get an up-close and personal experience with nature is a thrill to me and I hope the excitement and passion I feel in the moment is reflected in my images.
