Species: Kermode Bear | Location: The Great Bear Rain Forest in British Columbia, Canada
A bucket list adventure, we were lucky enough to see the elusive and rare Spirit Bear in the Great Bear Rainforest of B.C. Spirit Bears are actually black bears born with a creamy white coat and are the product of a mutant gene passed down from one or both parents. With an estimated population of about 500, they live nowhere else in the world and are protected as a rare species within the vast, uninhabited islands of the pristine rainforest. These bears are not aggressive as they do not know the harm man can inflict. This particular bear was quite curious and seemed interested in joining our little party. Oblivious to the camera, he came quite close until our guide shooed him away for his protection lest he become too comfortable with humans.
