Species: wild horse | Location: Ozark National Scenic Riverways, Shannon County, MO, United States of America
Shannon County, MO is home to 3 herds of wild horses. While no one is quite sure how the horses originally got there, it is commonly believed that they were released by farmers in the small town who were unable to feed them during the Great Depression. Nearly 20 years ago, the National Park Service tried to remove the horses, but people from several towns came together to fight to keep them wild. This photo is of a wild horse in the Shawnee Creek herd in late winter. Recent rain left a mud puddle in the middle of the field where the herd has been known to hang out. We spent several minutes staring at and observing each other through this puddle before she moved on with the herd.
