Species: Mountain Gorilla | Location: Parc National des Volcans, Rwanda
We hadn't even gotten out of the farmlands below Volcanoes National Park when the gorillas came over the stone wall. One gorilla appeared to walk more carefully than the others, holding a tiny bundle. Allowing us to get close, she showed us her baby, as proud as any new mother. The babe, born on Christmas Day less than three weeks prior, was tiny, but its group was strong and protective, as were the rangers who watched over the group day and night, all determined that this little gorilla would grow up and thrive in its ancestral lands.
