Willow Ptarmigan, Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains outside Silverton, Colorado., United States of America
Hiding in Plain Sight

Species: Willow Ptarmigan | Location: Ophir Pass in the San Juan Mountains outside Silverton, Colorado., United States of America

You can walk up to a ptarmigan close enough to step on it and never know it until all of a sudden there is a rush of wings as the bird flies away. I was lucky enough to see this one at the top of Ophir Pass, elevation around 12,000 feet, in the San Juan range of the Rocky Mountains, just outside Silverton, Colorado. As you can see, it's summer plumage blends in perfectly with its ultra-high-altitude mountain home.
