2017 Wildlife Photo Contest

Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus, Churchhill Manitoba, Canada
Taking a break

Species: Polar Bear, Ursus maritimus | Location: Churchhill Manitoba, Canada

We were out for a day on the tundra truck in Churchill Manitoba during late November 2016. The freezing season was late and the bears were piling up in the area waiting for the Hudson Bay to freeze over so they could head out for food (seals). We had 65 bear sightings in 4 days, it was a fantastic time. We had spotted 2 sets of mothers and their cubs over the 4 days, and this group was taking a rest on a frozen tundra pond. Since they have enough insulation for much colder weather than we were experiencing on this day, they lie on the ice to cool themselves.
