Green Basilisk Lizard, San Carlos - northern Costa Rica, Costa Rica
Green Basilisk Lizard Waiting to run

Species: Green Basilisk Lizard | Location: San Carlos - northern Costa Rica, Costa Rica

Walking a trail along a small stream, I saw this juvenile Green Basilisk lizard on a branch hanging over the stream. I took his picture and when I moved closer it dropped down into the stream and began to run across the top of the water to the other side. They are able to take advantage of the water's surface tension and run across it for up to four meters before they sink and have to swim.
