Glaucous-winged Gulls, and Sockeye Salmon, Brooks Falls, Katmai National Park, Alaska, United States of America
Wings of a Gull and Peeking Salmon

Species: Glaucous-winged Gulls, and Sockeye Salmon | Location: Brooks Falls, Katmai National Park, Alaska, United States of America

While brown bears are the main attraction at Brooks Falls, if you can tear your eyes away from them for a just moment, you'll see a lot of other activity going on in the river below. Glaucous-winged gulls and red sockeye salmon share the river with the bears. The gulls await and fight over scraps of fish, while the salmon make their way upstream to spawn, trying to avoid the fishing bears and becoming those left-over scraps for the gulls.

When I looked at the photo later that day, I was really surprised and thrilled to see the salmon peeking up out of the river. Along with the gull's spread wings, I felt like I'd hit the jackpot twice.
