Species: Chinstrap Penguins | Location: Half Moon Island, Shetland Islands, Antarctica, Antarctica
This photograph is of a mother Chinstrap penguin with her two chicks in their nest; one chick huddled beneath mom and the other seemingly waving to us! Chinstrap penguins generally have two chicks. Their main diet consists of krill and shrimp, the excretion of which accounts for the dark red color on the stones around them. Our ship was anchored at Half Moon Island in the South Shetlands in Antarctica when I took this photo. Penguins do not nest in the snow - they make nests of pebbles, and cool, dry weather is best during the breeding season.
