2017 Wildlife Photo Contest

African elephant, Okavango Delta, Botswana
Fragile

Species: African elephant | Location: Okavango Delta, Botswana

This African elephant, judged by our guide to be about two months old, appears to be alone, dwarfed by the tall winter grass of the Okavango Delta. In fact, it was right behind its mother and part of a herd numbering 75 or more. Although Botswana is a stronghold for African elephants, with a population of nearly 60,000, isolating this baby in the frame illustrates the fragility and tenuous existence of the species.
