Gentoo Penguin, Antarctic Peninsula, Yankee Harbor, Greenwich Island, Antarctica
Penguin Love; Mother Gentoo Penguin and Chick

Species: Gentoo Penguin | Location: Antarctic Peninsula, Yankee Harbor, Greenwich Island, Antarctica

We were in Antarctica, stopping at Yankee Harbor, Greenwich Island. There were colonies of Gentoo penguins there, most with either eggs or chicks. This is one of the (many) mothers with her chick, checking to make sure that it's OK. One unhatched egg sits beside them. The nests of penguins are made of small pebbles, which the adults carefully pile into a bowl shaped structure. The penguins in the background, thousands of them, were squabbling noisily!
