Yellow-bellied marmot, San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado, United States of America
Curious Marmots

Species: Yellow-bellied marmot | Location: San Juan Mountains of Southwestern Colorado, United States of America

My husband and I were taking a drive in the San Juan Range of the Colorado Rockies, just outside the town of Silverton, when we I stopped on a remote mountain jeep road to enjoy the beautiful scenery. Shortly thereafter, a family of marmots came climbing up the rocks and noticed our jeep (which I assume they thought was a big rock) and paused to study it curiously. Since it wasn't moving, they showed none of their normal caution, and spent quite a few minutes alongside the road, giving me the opportunity to very, very slowly take this picture.
