We had been following a pride of lions hunting around a herd of water buffalo. the lions had just brought a smaller one down. When I took this photo, the males were trying to kill it and wouldn't let the females in but they were anxious to get involved. As it happens, the water buffalo herd came in very aggressively to save it. It was a real stand off with lots of noise and dust flying. Two of the largest water buffalos got on both sides of the attacked one and pushed it up. They then took off, leaving the lions without their meal. It was an incredibly exciting experience to be in the thick of the drama.
