Species: Brown bear | Location: Katmai National Park, Alaska, United States of America
We were at Brooks Falls in Katmai Natl Park in Alaska for 4 days and loved every minute of it. From the walk from the lodge out to the falls where you could hear the bears growling and you might have to get off the trail to give way to a bear walking in the forest, until you got to the Jurassic Park style gate where you enter the walkway to get to the Falls. The sound of the bears was the most surprising. Roaring, growling...it was never quiet. This guy was at the top of the falls most days we were there. You can see he's been in a number of battles and might even have a broken jaw. He'd look over every once in awhile and I was glad we were on a platform above the rivers edge. Bears were all over and the sound was amazing. But this photo reminds me of the reality of life...these bears are fighting to survive and fighting for their food. Their whole focus is "food" as they are starting to prepare for winter. An amazing experience that I would do again if I have the chance.
