2017 Wildlife Photo Contest

turtle, Napo Wildlife Center, Ecuador
I must have had too many pisco sours. I'm seeing butterflies!

Species: turtle | Location: Napo Wildlife Center, Ecuador

I watch for hours as beautiful butterflies were "tear feeding", a phenomenon known as lachryphagy, on the turtles eyes. The butterflies sip on the tears to get sodium and other minerals that are needed for egg production and metabolism. Some people say that in return the butterflies are cleaning the turtles eyes?? I was totally amazed and watch this for hours. Thank goodness for digital photography-I took over 500 images, some very close up.
