Species: Red-shouldered hawk | Location: Wake Forest, NC, United States of America
We discovered a hawk's nest at the back of our property when two red shouldered hawks made repeated landings in a particular tree. We watched the nest daily for a couple weeks. The nest, built about 30 feet above the ground in a pine tree, finally showed new residents as four hatchlings revealed themselves. I shot photos almost daily, but the first sighting of the new born birds is my favorite. It was a thrill to observe the parents bringing food to the hatchlings and a treat to see them learn to fly.
