Species: Gorilla gorilla | Location: Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
This silverback gorilla was photographed in Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda in October 2006. Our group had been allowed in the presence of this gorilla family for perhaps 90 minutes of viewing and photography. At this point the dominate silverback became agitated and moved rapidly out of the brush to place himself between the humans and his females and young. This photograph was taken at a distance of approximately fifteen feet from the male gorilla. The rangers were alarmed by this behavior and indicated that it was time to depart as quietly and non-threatening as possible. I did not argue with them.
