2017 Wildlife Photo Contest

Hippo, Okavango Delta (Moremi Game Reserve), Botswana
Hippo Breach

Species: Hippo | Location: Okavango Delta (Moremi Game Reserve), Botswana

This photo was taken at Okuti Camp in Botswana in April 2017. We were on a boat tour of the Okavango Delta when we came across this hippo who interpreted our boat engine as a threat. He made several displays, usually starting out by staring at us, wiggling his ears and then he would jump out of the water. I had no idea that a hippopotamus was capable of of jumping that far. The sun was setting so there wasn't much light for photography, but still loved this behavior so much that I had to submit it.
