This photo was taken on 30 June 2016, near the Sankuyo Tshwaragano Community, east of the Okavango Delta, in Botswana. We had been tracking two male lions and anticipated them stopping for a drink at a known water hole. Although I got several shots, this one is my favorite because it shows the tongue extended and in contact with the water. Only one of the lions actually drank from this pool.

I am retired from careers in Air Force Intelligence and Software Engineering. My wife and I love to travel and we love to photograph wildlife. We have visited all 50 of the United States and have traveled to 5 continents. My goal in retired life is to photograph as many species of birds as possible. I have photographed 316 bird species in the state of Maryland, which recently ranked me 5th in the state. I especially love the challenge of photographing warblers. I shoot a Nikon D810s and my best lens is the Nikon 500mm f/4.0 VR. The 500mm is quickly becoming my photographic weapon of choice for distant wildlife, and it qualifies for its own passport.
