Species: Chestnut-Backed Chickadee | Location: Metro Vancouver Region, British Columbia, Canada
A dark, overcast day forces me to up the ISO for this photo, but also lends a painting-like effect to my photo of this Chestnut-Backed Chickadee, who was perched on one of the fruit trees in the backyard and in no particular hurry to nab a seed from the hanging feeding stations. In the summertime, there may be as many as four of these chubby and inquisitive songbirds, but we see only two now. A "specialty" of the Pacific Coast, Chestnut-Backed Chickadees possess a song that is sweeter (and sounds almost like trickling water) compared to the melody of their bigger cousins, the ubiquitous (and much flightier) Black-Capped Chickadees. Photographed in late December 2015.
