Species: Tree-climbing lion | Location: Queen Elizabeth National Park, Uganda
These lions are the same species we saw in other parts of Uganda but we learned that they have adapted to the terrain and climate in the savannah of Queen Elizabeth National Park. The climate is very hot and the grasses very tall and dry, so climbing the trees gives these lions some breezes to cool them off and a better vantage point to spot their prey. We were extremely lucky to find two of them perched in a tree; we were able to park right below them and observe them sleeping and awakening for an hour or so - it was fantastic! The guide said everyone is always eager to see the tree-climbing lions but are often unsuccessful, so this was a real treat.
