King Penguins, St. Andrews Bay, South Georgia in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands
King Penguins Enter The Surf

Species: King Penguins | Location: St. Andrews Bay, South Georgia in the Southern Ocean near Antarctica, South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands

Dawn on St. Andrews Bay in South Georgia, in the Southern Ocean, was a spectacular experience. We shared the sunrise with the largest King Penguin colony in the world. Stretching for miles were an estimated 300,000 Kings... but who's counting? A small group of the adults entered the surf in their endless task of feeding hungry chicks (who would drown before molting their downy coats and gaining their slick, water-friendly adult feathers).

About The Photographer

Cropped sgi2379.
I am a retired Orthodontic professor who has been enjoying the hobby of photography since my teen-age years. A camera is an indispensable companion on frequent nature expeditions, recording the amazing and unexpected sights encountered. Once home, I create photo books of the experience. Memories may indeed be fleeting, but images on film, or now digital sensors, allow us to relive our special nature moments.
