Cheetah kills gazelle

Species: Cheetah and Grant's Gazelle | Location: Lake Ndutu, Tanzania, United Republic of

While on Safari in Lake Ndutu, Tanzania, our guide spotted this cheetah with her three cubs at daybreak. We stayed with them as the mother carefully stalked a herd of grant’s gazelles while the cubs tagged along, playing. After she made the kill, the cheetah brought the prey right in front of our jeep, and we watched the gazelle take its last breath. She brought over her cubs, now frozen in silence and hidden in the bushes, and allowed them first digs at breakfast. Feasting for over an hour, they were careful not to puncture the stomach of the gazelle, so as not to attract the attention of scavengers. We later heard that the family stayed near the kill site for a couple of days.

About The Photographer

I am a physicist in Boston, Massachusetts, as well as an amateur shutterbug. My passion for wildlife and landscape photography takes me around the country and around the world. There’s nowhere I’d rather be than behind the camera, working on a composition, waiting for the right light and tripping the shutter at the precise moment: a truly zen-like experience.
