Hyena Sniffing at a Cape Buffalo Carcass

Species: Hyena, Cape Buffalo, Vulture | Location: Kruger National Park, South Africa

We were on a late afternoon game drive in Kruger National park when we came upon the carcasses of mother and baby Cape buffaloes. Several vultures stood atop the carcasses while others were patiently waiting their turn. As we watched, a spotted hyena cautiously trotted over and began to sniff at the carcass. The hyena was very nervous, probably because it was not sure if the lion that had killed the buffaloes was going to return soon. After a couple of minutes, the hyena left the scene and the vultures hopped back onto the prey.
