Lilac Breasted Roller in the Seregenti

Species: Lilac Breasted Roller | Location: Serengeti National Park, Tanzania, United Republic of

On safari drive in the Serengeti National Park in the evening around 6 p.m. the Lilac Breasted Roller landed on a tree about 30 feet from the land cruiser. We stopped and before the bird flew off I was able to take many photos of this beautiful creature. Lilac Breasted Roller is considered the most beautiful bird in Africa.

My photography passion started 1977-78 in Tanzania, East Africa as a school teacher. Photographing wildlife in the Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara and Tarangire National Park was exhilarating. Photography allowed me to capture moments in time such as a pride of lions hunting a herd of zebras in the jungle. Even though that experience happened 40 years ago, every time I see that photo again, the moment is relived with all the smells, afternoon heat, sounds of the zebra hoofs running and the mighty lions dominating their environment. I have returned to Africa four more times; capturing images in Botswana, South Africa, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Namibia, Tanzania and Kenya. I still remember the night a leopard ate his kill outside my tent in the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Even though I have a passion for photographing wildlife in Africa, my photographic experience has includes Australia, New Zealand, China, Malaysia, Thailand, Japan, Italy, Peru, Jamaica and throughout the Caribbean. Living in California I have had an amazing opportunities to take images throughout the High Sierras, including Yosemite. Immersed in their world, photographing wildlife astonishingly close is remarkable; black bears within 100 feet sends adrenaline pumping through my veins. In 2015, I had a magnificent trip to Denali National Park and Brooks Falls in Katmai National Park. Seeing the powerful grizzly so close at Brooks Falls in their natural environment was a moving experience - one that I love to freeze in time with images. My photographic goal is to capture many more images of nature and wildlife: tigers in India, polar bears in the artic and the snow leopard in China. Photography is more than just images, it is one’s life experiences.
