2017 Wildlife Photo Contest

Common Dolphin, Gulf of California, Mexico
Shadow Kiss

Species: Common Dolphin | Location: Gulf of California, Mexico

The conditions were just perfect when I took this photo of a common dolphin in the Gulf of California off of Baja California Sur. The boat was positioned in the calm sea to see the shadows of the dolphins as they played near the bow. Normally, I would take a burst of shots in a situation like this, but that day I decided to try single shots. I carefully observed the behavior of the dolphin, and watched his timing as he rose out of the water then dived back in. I took the shot, and after reviewing it immediately afterwards, I knew it was a keeper.
