Species: Polar | Location: High Arctic about 50 miles from the North Pole, Norway
I was in the High Arctic above the Arctic Circle on a ship with 50 other photographers in search of polar bears. We spent close to four days sailing around the icy waters looking for bears to no avail. Finally on the 5th day we spotted this mother bear with her two cubs. Out of curiosity, she led her two cubs up close to the ship to check us out, then sat down right in front of us and began to nurse. Clearly she had seen other ships with people before so she had no fear of nursing her cubs with us close by. There was dead silence on the deck of the ship except for the sound of the shutters of the cameras. It was an awesome moment to say the least.
