Tent-making bats, Boca Tapada, Costa Rica
Bat duo duel over night nectar

Species: Tent-making bats | Location: Boca Tapada, Costa Rica

I caught a magical moment when two bats showed up for the same nectar, dueling for their favorite food. Look closely and you can see the sharp, pointy teeth that look like fangs, baring them ferociously as each fights for food supremacy. Tent-making bats live in the lowland rain forests of Central America and South America. They get their name from their unique habit of making tents from leaves by which they protect themselves from the heavy rains. Their diet consists primarily of nectar, pollen, flower parts, and small insects.
