Polar Bear, Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, USA
Polar Bear without the ice!!

Species: Polar Bear | Location: Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, Alaska, USA

I was in Kaktovic, on the northern edge of Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in mid-September. The early melting and delayed freezing of the Arctic ice along these villages have made a few polar bears come ashore looking for food. I took this photo one grey and cold morning, when this Polar bear swam in from the ocean and started foraging for food. It was a strange and unusual sight - a beautiful, full grown polar bear right in front of me in its natural habitat, but with no ice anywhere!
