Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), Foxe Basin, Nunavut, Canada
Surfacing bowhead

Species: Bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus) | Location: Foxe Basin, Nunavut, Canada

An adult bowhead whale (Balaena mysticetus), or Greenland right whale, surfacing at the floe edge in northern Foxe Basin, Nunavut, Canada, which is an important nursery ground for this species. The bowhead whale gets its name due to the large arched ("bowed") upper jaw, as seen here. Baleen whales like bowhead whales have two blowholes, located side by side, which is also visible in the photograph.
