Zanzibar red colobus, Jozani National Forest, Zanzibar, Tanzania
The Shaman

Species: Zanzibar red colobus | Location: Jozani National Forest, Zanzibar, Tanzania

A moment of stillness descended on the forest floor as this Zanzibar red colobus fixed her gaze to the heavens. Was she conjuring rain? Protection for her cohorts? There are only about 1,000 of these primates in the world, all living among the Indian almond and mango branches of Jozani National Forest. Conservation efforts are fortifying the rare, endangered species, leaving their fate less dependent on the whims of the gods.
