The Ultimate Huntress

Species: Giant Wood spider (Nephila sp) | Location: Mojo Plantation, Madikeri, Karnataka, India, India

Spiders make formidable predators. The photograph shows the Giant Wood Spider (Nephila ) who has captured and is feeding upon a dragonfly. The Nephila weave golden coloured silk webs spanning several feet across tree trunks, which are very effective in capturing prey! This photo was taken on an organic coffee plantation (Mojo Plantation) located in the rain forests of the Western Ghats of South India. Pests are kept under check by encouraging local biodiversity.

About The Photographer

Cropped sujata pic

These photographs have been taken on an organic spice and coffee plantation in the rain forests of Western Ghats of South India. The farming practices are based upon ecologically sustainable principles. Biodiversity is encouraged on the farm through leaving fallow areas, riparian stretches with as much wilderness as possible, integrated into the cropping areas. The rich biodiversity in the farm enables a balanced pest-predator relationship. Consequently, there are no problems with pests or pathogens as evident from the photographs uploaded here. www.rainforestours.com
