Flicker Fly

Species: Northern Flicker / Colaptes auratus | Location: Charlotte Hardwoods, Cape Coral, Florida, USA

On a rainy evening I was surprised to find the white sugar sand trails I normally hike to be under water. I was even more surprised to find some Northern Flickers hopping around on the ground working the edges of the puddles for floating ants. I said if they can get wet, so can I and began to follow them ankle deep, down the trail. I then spotted a lone sentinel up in a well worked 'woodpecker' tree. As I turned to focus in on him, he took off from the tree the instant I snapped the picture. I was fortunate to get him in focus.
