Species: barred owl | Location: Trego Nature Trail, Trego, WI , USA
While hiking in the afternoon, on a hot, sunny day just last week, we left the edge of the Namekagon River and headed into the forest. My wife, Karen, recognized the distinctive call we heard of the barred owl. It sounded just like someone asking, "Who? Who? Who cooks for you?" We ducked down and waited a bit. Sneaking forward, I was just tall enough to spot the owl fairly close by through the birch leaves. He flew off a just little ways and landed again, looking around every now and then, even letting me inch closer to it. After what seemed like forever, he finally flew away, and we continued on. It was a special experience we'll never forget!
