2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

Short-eared Owl, Snohomish County Washington, United States
I See You

Species: Short-eared Owl | Location: Snohomish County Washington, United States

We are fortunate to have a plethora of wildlife visit the Northwest in winter, Snow Geese, Trumpeter and Tundra Swans, and many birds of prey including hawks and owls. Our most abundant owl is the Short-earred Owl which hunts in the daytime. I have photographed them in the Skagit Valley and Snohomish County in the past years and there are several well known areas where they are generally found. They compete with the Northern Harrier and other owls for prey and I have been fortunate to both see and photograph this activity. I chose this photo because of the owl looking directly at me and then resuming its flight pattern searching for prey.
