Red-tailed Hawk, Massachusetts Audubon's Ipswich River Sanctuary in Topsfield, Massachusetts, United States
Red-tail in Blue Light

Species: Red-tailed Hawk | Location: Massachusetts Audubon's Ipswich River Sanctuary in Topsfield, Massachusetts, United States

This particular Red-tailed Hawk had gained a reputation for hunting in the afternoon from eye-level bluebird boxes in a field at a local sanctuary. This day, I had enjoyed watching him perching on the boxes as he scanned the fields looking for the telltale movement of a field mouse or vole in the grass, then darting from his perch to pounce, as the late afternoon winter sky darkened and snow began to fall. At just about dusk he seemed to settle in for a bit and I managed this portrait in the snow showing his eponymous red-tail against the blue winter light.

About The Photographer

Cropped 500pxprofile

I have enjoyed a lifelong interest in all aspects of photography. My working career has primarily been on the printing and production side of the industry, and I have had the pleasure of printing for and working with some excellent professional photographers over the years. With my growing interest in the natural world (especially birds), it was inevitable that I would combine these two passions, and in the last several years, I have concentrated my efforts in being behind the camera again. My goal is to share portraits, interesting behaviors, and moments often too fleeting for the casual observer to catch, so that more people become interested in, and care about preserving, the wildlife of our planet.
