2016 Wildlife Photo Contest

Eulachon (Smelt) , Kemano River North coast British Columbia , Canada
Eulachons Oolichans (Smelt) On Peraid

Species: Eulachon (Smelt) | Location: Kemano River North coast British Columbia , Canada

This photo was taken in the ocean when the Eulachons were staging to get ready to go up the Kemano River to spawn. A number of seals had forces the fish into the shore and were taking turns swimming through the school to feed. I took this photo while laying on my stomach on a ramp down to a dock. These fish only come to the rivers mouth to spawn once a year and some times they spend as little as three days there. For light I had a setting sun off behind and off the my right. Allan

About The Photographer

Cropped dsc 0304 new tone cutout 1

My name is Allan Colton and my photos are inspired by the immense diversity of the flora and fauna in Northwest British Columbia. Since my childhood in Ocean Falls, I have explored a myriad of landscapes and have sighted the variety of wildlife found in this beautiful area. During this time spent exploring and living on the West Coast, I developed a passion for capturing both the unique expressions displayed by wildlife and the transitory moments of light and colour in photography.

I am also an avid outdoors man who enjoys hiking, boating, diving, and fishing and therefore find many other opportunities to record my sightings with a camera..
